about us

CMA – Cyprus Music Archive is a non-profit company. It was founded in 2022 by ethnomusicologist Nicoletta Demetriou, who also acts as its director.

CMA aims to play an active role in the culture of Cyprus, particularly traditional culture, with an emphasis on Cypriot traditional music, folk poetry, folklore, local history and tradition. It also aims to bring Cypriot traditional music – music practice, as well as research – close to the public, through a series of key actions: workshops, seminars, lectures, publications, concerts, active online and media presence, etc.

One of CMA’s basic longterm goals is to discover and record existing archives of Cypriot traditional music found in the hands of researchers/musicians/singers and/or other citizens, and to bring them together in a digital library – essentially an open-access archive. The library/archive will be available not only to researchers and performers of Cypriot traditional music, but to any interested citizen. CMA has already begun collaborating with people who own such archives, so as to evaluate and record them, as well as to digitize and bring them to light.
